The Programme

The M+ Internship Programme, supported by The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation Hong Kong, is a unique opportunity for those who are interested in developing a career in the museum field.

You will work closely with the M+ team full time for a period of one year, gaining both practical and theoretical training.

This intake will take place from August 2024 to August 2025.

The Archives & Library (A&L) Internship offers valuable training for individuals seeking practical experience in managing museum archives and library collections. Under the guidance of the Librarian, you will actively participate in collection management projects and contribute to community engagement programmes.

Responsibilities will encompass assisting with the reference library circulation and copy-cataloguing materials, which ensures cataloguing consistency across our collections.

This in turn makes our library's catalogue more navigable for our users. You will have the opportunity to discover a rich research collection of books on visual arts, design and architecture, moving image, museology, art conservation, interpretation, and other subjects.

You will also support the work of the archivists and engage with visitors to the Research Centre and staff fostering meaningful interactions.

This internship provides a unique opportunity to support the A&L team while developing essential skills and knowledge in the field.

You will be able to:

  • gain knowledge and insight into collection management practices within a museum with emphasis on archives and libraries.
  • collaborate and engage with colleagues from various departments, including Curatorial and Conservation.
  • gain experience in establishing and operating a library within a museum setting.
  • gain knowledge of library terminology and standard library practices, including cataloguing rules and bibliographic record structure.
  • work in the Archives Team, expanding your understanding of the role and importance of archival practices and processes.
  • familiarize yourself with M+ within the context of a cultural district, equipping you with invaluable skills for a career in the arts and museum sector.

You need to:

  • possess a recognized university degree ideally in relevant fields such as Library Studies, Information Management or Art History.

M+ is a museum dedicated to collecting, exhibiting, and interpreting visual art, design and architecture, moving image, and Hong Kong visual culture of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.

In Hong Kong’s West Kowloon Cultural District, we are building one of the largest museums of modern and contemporary visual culture in the world, with a bold ambition to establish ourselves as one of the world’s leading cultural institutions.

Our aim is to create a new kind of museum that reflects our unique time and place, a museum that builds on Hong Kong’s historic balance of the local and international to define a distinctive and innovative voice for Asia’s twenty-first century.

About Us:

Stretching across 40 hectares of reclaimed land, the West Kowloon Cultural District is one of the largest cultural projects in the world, blending art, education and open space.

Its vision is to create a vibrant cultural quarter for Hong Kong where the local arts scene can interact, develop and collaborate. Providing 23 hectares of public open space with two kilometres of vibrant harbour-front promenade, it will also include a variety of arts and cultural facilities that will produce and host world-class exhibitions, performances and arts and cultural events.

A Development Plan for the District, based on well-received Foster + Partner’s Conceptual Plan, was approved by the Chief Executive-in-Council in January 2013. Overlooking the magnificent Victoria Harbour, the District will begin to take shape over the next decade.
