Bank of America

Our purpose as a firm is to make financial lives better through the power of every connection. Did you know that Bank of America is the top global bank on Fortune’s ‘Change the World’ list of companies? Bank of America was also recognized by Fortune for its recent $50 million equity investment in minority depository institutions (MDIs) as part of its $1 billion, four-year commitment to advance racial equality and economic opportunity.

Working from offices in more than 35 countries, our people partner with leading corporate and institutional investors – including almost all of the Fortune 500 – to provide a full suite of financial products and services. We’re proud to be a global leader in corporate and investment banking, sales and trading. And even prouder of ensuring our success is shared with our clients and communities.

Our Asia Pacific team is spread across in 12 markets, connecting Asia to the world and the world to Asia. Our regional footprint covers 12 currencies, more than a dozen languages and five time zones, placing us firmly among the region’s leading financial services companies.

Our Opportunities

Bank of America

We offer a variety of opportunities including insight programs, summer internships, and industrial placements/attachments. So wherever you’re up to with your studies – and whatever your skills and ambitions – we can help you build a career on your own terms.

Studying for your first university degree? Our Banking Connections insight program offers a shorter, broader view of our businesses. Rather than being placed in a specific team, you’ll enjoy a tailored program that will help you develop new skills and learn enough about our different opportunities to apply for an internship.

Summer internships typically last 10-12 weeks and attract students in their penultimate year of university who want to start working full-time the following year. They’re our primary source of hiring for our full-time graduate programs and a great way to get a taste of what it’ll be like – as well as hone your skills through structured performance evaluations, training, development and social opportunities.

We also offer fixed-term placements such as industrial placements/attachments throughout the year that vary in length depending on business need.

Opportunities for STEM Students

Bank of America

If you have a background in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics), you may naturally be gravitating towards one of our tech roles. But did you know we welcome STEM candidates across our banking programmes, too?
On the flip side, we also welcome business students to apply for our Global Technology programme, as not all roles require coding knowledge. All we ask is that you think digitally and thrive on creating the kind of technological innovations that drive our business – and industry – forward.

Global Technology

This 50,000-strong team (and counting) has 3,000 patents pending and delivers technology services that form the backbone of our retail, commercial and institutional businesses.

Global Investment Banking

Investment Banking is part of a team responsible for structuring and underwriting equity and debt transactions that help large corporate and government clients grow.

Global Markets

Working at the centre of the world’s debt and equity markets, the Global Markets team provides sales and trading services, liquidity, hedging strategies, analytics and pricing to more than 9,000 institutional clients.

Global Research

One of the world’s most respected research organizations, the Global Research team provides market insights, research, global trading and financing that helps investors and asset managers achieve their goals.

Take the Challenge

Bank of America

Our purpose is simple: to make lives better. Whether that’s financially or by using our power to drive social change, we work for what matters.

Think you already know all about us? Think we’re ‘just a bank’? We think you might be surprised, take our Challenge https://takethechallenge.site/game.php by 17 November 2021 (Wednesday) 23:59 HKT/SGT to find out. Employee Profiles

Bank of America

Angeline Tan
Vice President, Global Transaction Services

What does a typical day look like for you?

There is no typical day in the Regional Corporate Sales team and that is what excites me most about my job! Some days are spent meeting clients and learning more about how we can value-add to them. Other days are spent strategizing and preparing decks and proposals for a client pitch. There are also times where I attend internal learning sessions on new product launches, organize bank events for our clients, and conduct comprehensive company and industry research, amongst many other activities.

How do you describe the culture at the bank?

One of the best things about the bank is that everyone is extremely open and inclusive. Juniors and interns are encouraged to interact with senior management regularly, and all opinions and ideas are valued across all levels of the bank.

I believe that this is a great firm to not only begin your career, but also a place to continue developing your career.

What do you enjoy doing in your personal time?

I love traveling. Exploring new cities, being exposed to different cultures, and meeting people from various backgrounds excite me. I am passionate about food, and am a self-professed food blogger. I believe that my interests will allow me to excel in a global organization like Bank of America Merrill Lynch.

Where do you see yourself in the future?

I see myself being a full-fledged Regional Treasury Sales Officer holding a portfolio of clients across various industries in Bank of America Merrill Lynch. I believe that this is a great firm to not only begin your career, but also a place to continue developing your career.

Hazel Tan
Officer, Technology & operations

What persuaded you to work for Bank of America?

I interned here in my penultimate year of university and I found that there was a lot to learn from the team. I felt it was an environment that I could grow and develop in, and that made me want to work for Bank of America.

How does the bank support your development?

There is a supportive culture toward learning and development, and managers take into account your concerns and personal goals toward developing your career. There are also many self-learning platforms that allow us to be able to learn new content in our own time.

In one word, how would you describe Bank of America?

Dynamic.

"There is a supportive culture toward learning and development."

What are the most rewarding aspects of your job?

As my role involves assisting clients with their daily treasury transaction queries, the rewarding aspect of my job comes from helping the client solve an issue successfully without impact to them.

What advice would you give to students?

Do not be afraid or hesitant to try something new. The role might not be one that you’d ever envisioned yourself in but there is always something new to learn in every role.

Burning Questions with Bank of America Grads

Bank of America

We reached out to the current group of Graduates in the Bank of America Grad Programme from their varying degree disciplines and within different rotations, to ask them some burning questions, as requested by students.  Thank you to the Bank of America Grads for their time and effort.  Let’s see what they have to say!

bank of america

Name: Astrid Liu
LOB: Global Capital Markets
University attended: Emory University
Your major: Finance, Economics

What were the first 6 months like for you? What have you really enjoyed?

Everyone says banking has a steep learning curve – it is true. It is not only about picking up technical skills at work, but also the transition of roles, from a student to a professional. I have had to learn how to think and respond as a professional who represents the bank.

I enjoy the nature of the job as it is extremely diverse, we talk to many companies in different industries and also lots of investors. When I am on meetings with investors, I ask myself why the investors would raise that question, and why didn’t I think of this angle before.

Was your position as you expected it to be? Was anything surprising?

My daily routine is similar to what I expected in terms of duties, but it is more diverse than I thought. Within Private Capital Markets, we collaborate with various industry teams, communicate with companies at different stages, and the deal type also varies according to market conditions and company needs.

What is the longest day you have worked and have you had to work Saturdays at all?

Longest day was 9AM-11PM. If there is an urgent pitch/live deal, I might have to work Saturdays, but that Saturday won’t be a full-day of work.

What sort of work do you do, day to day?

I sit with Private Capital Markets team in Equity Capital Markets. Our day to day work can be summarized by connecting investors with private companies in need of capital. We catch up with investors, trying to understand their current preference in terms of deal type, verticals, ticket size, and region. Or, we talk to companies, getting to know their current financing plan and how BofA can help with their capital market journey. Once supply and demand matches, we arrange management meetings and help to proceed smoothly until settlement.

What projects have you worked on?

Very diverse – ranging from early stage private placement to pre-IPO, from consumer, biotech, to automotive names.

What systems do you use?

Pitchbook, Dealogic, Bloomberg, Excel/PPT

What sort of support do you get from your work? Either from your direct leader or the company in general?

My team is very caring and they even gave me advice when I relocated to Hong Kong in the beginning. Also our global head of Global Capital Markets held analysts & associates session to make us feel at home.

Our HR team is very helpful and would assist me in navigating the resources provided by the company. Whenever I have a question, our HR team is always responsive. Also, BofA responded very quickly to the changing pandemic situation.

What skills do you think you need to succeed in your role? Is this different to what you thought you would need?

Detail-oriented, organizational skill, communicative/people skill are the most important for juniors I would say.

What perks are offered by Bank of America?

Medical insurance, rental allowance, yearly tech equipment allowance, relocation stipend, health and wellness support.

bank of america

Name: Elaine Kwok
LOB: Global Banking and Markets Chief Operating Office (COO)
University attended: The Chinese University of Hong Kong
Your major: International Business and Chinese Enterprise

What were the first 6 months like for you? What have you really enjoyed?

My first 6 months in the job was very different from what I envisioned originally due to COVID.

The New York trip for analysts was cancelled and my onboarding/ training process was done virtually. In the first month, I attended intensive courses conducted by an experienced trainer on the financial market with other analysts. HR also arranged virtual sessions for us to meet with senior management and representatives from different LOBs.

Despite not being able to interact with colleagues in person, I am grateful for all the support provided by the team. My managers knew it would be hard for me to adapt in a virtual setting so I had frequent catchups with them and regular team meetings. Overall the first 6 months was a lot of learning, absorbing new knowledge and blending into the team.

Was your position as you expected it to be? Was anything surprising?

My role gave me what I expected and even more! I was quite surprised by the opportunity I had to work closely with external parties for a project and I still remember being so excited and nervous having my first external business meeting in a consultant’s office (even if the commute was just a 5 minute walk across the street). I also did not expect to know senior management on a personal level but they are very down to earth and conversations flow naturally on the floor.

What is the longest day you have worked and have you had to work Saturdays at all?

The longest day I have worked was probably until 11pm and looking back, it was mainly due to my own incompetency in using excel. My task could have been completed a lot quicker if I’m an expert in pivot tables and excel formulas. After all, working smart is more important than working hard.

Yes, I occasionally have to work during weekends. As I am responsible for updating senior leaders the latest COVID situation in Hong Kong, I have to summarize key events and major announcements in a timely manner and it would be too late for the note to get sent out on Monday. However, I would say managers are very accommodating and they would not ask you to work during weekends if it is unnecessary.

What sort of work do you do, day to day?

Every day is different but my main responsibility is to conduct analysis/research for senior management on topics that they are interested in. I also act as a liaison to senior leadership and help manage and implement key strategic initiatives. I have been working closely on COVID related tasks (work posture, summary for the 12 markets, RTO planning), an expansion project and governance routines (monthly entity meetings, SFC inspection, setting risk limits). I also collaborate with other COOs and LOBs on a daily basis to ensure information is being passed on in an accurate and timely manner.

What projects have you worked on?

I am heavily involved in a strategic expansion project for the bank, return to office planning in Hong Kong, COO newsletter and other governance related projects.

What systems do you use?

My role is not too technical so I only use the usual Microsoft Office applications.

What sort of support do you get from your work? Either from your direct leader or the company in general?

As a junior, I can sometimes feel lost/unsure if I am doing the right thing. My managers supported me through having conversations about it to make sure our expectations align, this also calms me down when I start doubting myself. On the other hand, everyone in the team is always happy to provide guidance on how I can improve further and is very accommodating to me reaching out for anything.

In a company perspective, the bank really took care of staff during the pandemic. COVID bonuses were distributed to almost everyone to offer extra support during the difficult times. It is also nice to see cash subsidies being offered to frontline retail bank staff in the US as they have been impacted immensely. In some countries with limited/ difficult vaccine access, the bank cooperated with professionals to roll out vaccine drives for staff and their family. This really shows that the bank value their people and I am proud of it.

What skills do you think you need to succeed in your role? Is this different to what you thought you would need?

Having interpersonal skills and being detail oriented are the two most important skills in my role. This aligns with my original expectation as COOs have to collaborate with various LOBs to implement projects. Being focused on details can help to minimize mistakes which will help you succeed.

What perks are offered by Bank of America?

The bank works with various merchants to provide discounts/ exclusive deals for staff on the MyPerks website. Available perks range from food and beverage, fashion, electronic devices to gym membership subscription. You can almost find anything you want there at a discounted price! I also heard from colleagues that the company’s insurance policy for staff is one of the best in the industry.

bank of america

Name: Jiaxin (Oriana) WEI
LOB: Global Banking and Markets Chief Operating Office (COO)
University attended: the Chinese University of Hong Kong (Undergraduate); London Business School (Masters)
Your major: Finance and Business Analytics

What were the first 6 months like for you? What have you really enjoyed?

The first 6 months was a journey for me to transit from a student to a young professional, not only from a lifestyle perspective but also my mindset. I was new to the working environment, new to the bank, and new to the role 6 months ago. It took time for me to get used to the fast-paced environment on the trading floor, learn various knowledge, and get to know people. It is definitely challenging and also with a steep learning curve.

I really enjoyed learning new things and getting in touch with different teams such as compliance and technology on projects which support different businesses under APAC Equity such as executions and advisory sales.

Was your position as you expected it to be? Was anything surprising?

I did the summer internship remotely due to Covid-19 in 2020 and returned as a graduate analyst in 2021. I was involved in one project during the internship which gave me a flavor of the job. When I returned as a graduate in the office, the day-to-day job definitely has a larger scope than what I have done in the summer internship and was of higher complexity. Since you are not only working on one single project day-to-day, multitasking is an essential skill during the full-time job while it might not be the highest priority while you were doing a summer internship remotely.

The broad coverage and exposure, and diversity of projects in the COO function is surprising and exciting for me.

What is the longest day you have worked and have you had to work Saturdays at all?

The longest day I have worked was the day I was determined to finish one of the quarterly reviews. I spent 6 extra hours besides the normal working hours to get it finished. But on normal days, I can usually manage to get things done during my working hours.

Normally it is not required to work on Saturdays but it depends on whether you want to devote extra time to learn and do your job better. So I personally will invest some time to learn out of working hours and on Saturdays.

What sort of work do you do, day to day?

The COO job is to ensure the operating efficiency and smoothness of the line of business that you cover. For me, I am supporting the APAC equity team and I mainly focus on execution and advisory sales for now. This includes coordinating front desks, technology, operations, and other stakeholders for remediation, governing and managing the AML/KYC refresh process to ensure accounts are good to trade, reviewing and updating business procedures and guidelines, reporting and updating internal business results, connecting right teams to solve production issues, etc.

What projects have you worked on?

I have worked on different types of projects for execution and advisory sales. To give examples on each side, I am working on order given entity remediation project for execution business to ensure the reporting correctness. I also take charge of AML/KYC refresh governance and management projects which connect with the client outreach team and refresh team to ensure that accounts meet legal, regulatory, and BofA policy requirements to fight against on-going financial crimes.

What systems do you use?

I use different systems daily to check KYC/AML account information, trade details, revenues, and to communicate with different stakeholders.

What sort of support do you get from your work? Either from your direct leader or the company in general?

BofA has supportive teammates, not only your manager but also everyone directly or indirectly that you work with. You can always reach out to your buddy and mentor to discuss questions, confusions, or bottlenecks tht you might face. People in the firm are willing to connect as well not only when you have specific questions for them but also when you simply want to understand their day-to-day job and responsibilities. The company also has self-learning materials on our Learning portal, which not only includes financial knowledge but also, soft skills, and metal health topics which is a golden source for you to get support as well.

What skills do you think you need to succeed in your role? Is this different to what you thought you would need?

The first set of skills are attention to details, problem solving, and a proactive attitude, given that there may not be a standard solution for an issue/problem. When you encounter such an issue, this would be the time for you to be pay attention to the details, and to proactively think of solutions to the problem.

Second set of skills are communications, coordination, and teamwork. Most of the projects require different teams to work together and COO is the role to coordinate and communicate to improve the efficiency and drive the best results together as a team.

Last but not least, project management, multitasking, and time management are important as well. You have different projects on hand and you need to properly prioritize to allocate time and get things done in time.

What perks are offered by Bank of America?

Insurance, online learning and development, and there are also many other benefits that can be found on our internal MyPerks website.

This extensive exposure into the world of GHR ensures a holistic understanding of the interdependency between all HR functions and how we work together to drive critical business decisions as a strategic partner.

Was your position as you expected it to be? Was anything surprising?

It has definitely exceeded beyond my expectations. With a strong network comprising previous graduates, I had great insight into their experiences and journeys. This together with onboarding inductions and goal setting conversations with my managers helped me to set expectations and prepare me for each rotation. Most surprising for me was how we embed our people priorities in areas I had never thought of – for example, protecting the welfare of our junior talent population by managing their work hours.

What is the longest day you have worked and have you had to work Saturdays at all?

Having supported the International Compensation & Benefits team through the highly intensive and time sensitive year-end reviews, my longest 12-hour day was preparing for the compensation committee reviews as I had to rely on information coming from various parties. Due to this, I even volunteered one Saturday morning to consolidate the final versions of my pieces for the meeting packs.

What sort of work do you do, day to day?

Early on in my first rotation, I was told that our day-to-day would often be very spontaneous and dependent on requests from the business. While I do have regular reporting and business-as-usual work, I also have the opportunity to work on numerous projects and ad hoc requests that pop up.

What projects have you worked on?

With the HR Generalist team, I worked on analysis and announcements of our employee engagement survey as well as the year-end review roundtables. I then worked through the year-end compensation process, managing the Global Markets Analyst Process, creating manager dashboards and validating our Sharing Success award. My biggest project so far has been in coordinating with the Global HR team in preparing and finalizing compensation recommendations.

What systems do you use?

Workday, Microstrategy, RMS

What sort of support do you get from your work? Either from your direct leader or the company in general?

Even throughout the pandemic and work from home posture, I have had the support of my buddy and graduate network, rotation managers and teams, and career mentor – all of whom had a part to play in coaching me to ensure that I have the right tools and resources available to succeed. On a broader level, the junior talent council regularly hosts cross-line of business learning series and other sharing sessions covering a range of topics, including covering fintech and mindfulness. With a culture of connectivity and collaboration embedded across the enterprise, I have always felt empowered to own my career development.

What skills do you think you need to succeed in your role? Is this different to what you thought you would need?

Diligence and strong communication is essential, especially when working with sensitive data across several parties. You should be flexible and have a growth mindset. As a deeply inter-connected team, you want to ensure you have the ability to build partnerships through empathy and understanding. One skill I undermined before joining was the need to be analytical and data savvy as well!

Name: Ray Liu
LOB: Global Investment Banking
University attended: National Tsinghua University
Your major: Mechanical Engineering and Quantitative Finance

What were the first 6 months like for you? What have you really enjoyed?

It has been a fantastic journey and I can’t believe the time just went by so fast. From relocating to a new city, undergoing 21-days quarantine, completing all virtual training with my peer cohort, to really settling myself into the real corporate battle – on the ground supporting investment banking businesses in the Hong Kong office. What I enjoy about my everyday work the most is the opportunity to witness the strategic decision-making process of defining impactful transactions for our clients. Also, being able to contribute to the process of supporting these transactions is definitely rewarding.

Was your position as you expected it to be? Was anything surprising?

Yes but also not quite. Although I have been through the summer internship in the previous year before joining back full-time, I would say the exposure is totally at a different level.

What is the longest day you have worked and have you had to work Saturdays at all?

Most Saturdays, yes. Since most of the work is project-based, some of the deliverables would require us to finalize over the weekend.

What sort of work do you do, day to day?

We work on institutional level transactions across various investment banking products such as equities, debt, M&A; and across various sectors such as financial institutions, industrials, TMT, etc. The actual deliverables to support senior bankers include but not limited to client pitch books, industry updates, transaction documents, internal and external meeting materials, advisory proposals, etc.

What projects have you worked on?

So far, I’ve worked on different live projects including IPOs, equity follow-on, debt offerings, and M&A across the Asia Pacific region. In addition, I’ve also worked on different client pitches to participate in the process of winning businesses and gaining credibility from clients.

What systems do you use?

FactSet, Bloomberg, Dealogic are the systems that we get in touch with most often.

What sort of support do you get from your work? Either from your direct leader or the company in general?

Bank of America offers great opportunities when I first started including the formal regional training, monthly “Lunch & Learn” sessions, and numerous resources and information that could be found on the BofA portal. Most importantly, the staffers and the people that I’ve worked with, all of whom have taken an interest in supporting my development of this rewarding career. I could feel the seniors truly care about me not just at work but also outside of work – which I’m really thankful for.

What skills do you think you need to succeed in your role? Is this different to what you thought you would need?

Being flexible and adaptable. The job nature requires the ability of multitasking (manage different tasks and projects efficiently at the same time) and the ability to work under pressure.

Problem-solving. Every day is a new day and we would face different situations internally and externally so the work itself requires analytical problem-solving skills not just to work hard but also to work smart.

What perks are offered by Bank of America?

  • Relocation support (VISA, temp accommodation, etc.)
  • Full package of employee insurance which could also cover your family
  • Flexible spending account to support work life balance
